Colorful Stage! The Movie: A Miku Who Can't Sing – The First Theatrical Hatsune Miku Film Hits North America This April
Hatsune Miku fans, get ready! The world’s most famous Virtual Singer is making her big-screen debut in Colorful Stage! The Movie: A Miku Who Can't Sing, an all-new animated film based on the smash-hit rhythm game HATSUNE MIKU: COLORFUL STAGE! Distributed by GKIDS, the movie will be released in North America on April 11, 2025.
This marks the first-ever theatrical film starring Hatsune Miku, one of the most beloved digital idols in pop culture. Created by studio P.A.WORKS, the film is set in the vibrant world of SEKAI, where high school students explore their emotions and dreams through music alongside Miku and other Virtual Singers.
A New Miku, A New Challenge
The film follows Hoshino Ichika, a high school musician who discovers a mysterious version of Miku—one who cannot sing. This new Miku struggles to connect with listeners through music, forcing Ichika and her friends to help her find her voice once again. Fans of the game will recognize familiar faces from its diverse cast, as the movie includes both original characters and returning Virtual Singers from the franchise.
Returning cast members include Saki Fujita as Hatsune Miku and Ruriko Noguchi as Ichika Hoshino, with the original voice actors reprising their roles from the game. The film is directed by Hata Hiroyuki, with a screenplay by Yonaiyama Yoko and character designs by Akiyama Yuki.
Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage – A Global Phenomenon
First released in 2020, the mobile rhythm game HATSUNE MIKU: COLORFUL STAGE! quickly became a worldwide success, amassing over 10 million players within two years. The game blends music and storytelling, featuring multiple character groups who each interact with Virtual Singers like Miku in unique ways. Given its immense popularity, it was only a matter of time before a theatrical adaptation became a reality.
Fan Reactions: Excitement and Concerns
Fans of Project SEKAI (as the game is known in Japan) have expressed both excitement and curiosity about how the story will translate to the big screen. Given the game’s five distinct character groups—each with its own deeply emotional arcs—some wonder how the film will handle such a complex narrative.
"Being familiar with Miku is one thing, being familiar with Project Sekai is quite another... there are 20 human characters! I absolutely get why non-players would find this impenetrable." – Suxinn, Anime News Network Forums
"I was pretty excited about it… I did buy a $300 iPad specifically to play this game. I guess I can see how it could be confusing without knowing the backstories of all the groups, but not sure how they could recap everything in a single movie." – Siegfriedl88, Anime News Network Forums
Despite these concerns, anticipation remains high as fans eagerly await more details on how the film will tackle its unique premise.
