My Melody & Kuromi: A Kawaii Stop-Motion Adventure Arrives on Netflix This July!

Sanrio fans, get ready for the ultimate dose of cuteness! My Melody & Kuromi, an all-new stop-motion animated series, is making its way to Netflix in July, bringing the beloved characters of Mariland to life like never before. With 2025 marking My Melody’s 50th anniversary and Kuromi’s 20th anniversary, this charming new show is the perfect celebration of their legacy.

 

A Storybook-Like Adventure in Mariland

Set in the enchanting world of Mariland, the series follows My Melody, a kindhearted and cheerful girl who loves baking cookies with her mother and taking care of her younger brother. Since her debut in 1975, she has won the hearts of fans worldwide with her sweet and straightforward nature. On the other hand, her self-proclaimed rival, Kuromi, is known for her mischievous side, but underneath, she’s actually quite feminine and endearing. Since her debut in 2005, Kuromi has skyrocketed in popularity, even ranking in the Top 3 of the 2024 Sanrio Character Ranking!

Stop Motion Magic from Toruku & WIT Studio

The series is a stop-motion first for Toruku, a studio under WIT Studio (known for its work on Attack on Titan and Spy x Family). Directed by Tomoki Misato (Pui Pui Molcar), My Melody & Kuromi is a visually delightful experience, featuring handcrafted sets and stunning stop-motion animation.

“I’m thrilled that this project is finally announced in this important year marking the 50th anniversary of My Melody and the 20th anniversary of Kuromi,” Misato shared. “This momentous project motivated all of us to come together, take on various challenges, and push the envelope with stop-motion. I hope everyone will enjoy this exciting story set in our handcrafted Mariland, the thrilling action that pushes the limits of stop-motion, and, of course, the cute and dynamic characters.”

A Passionate Creative Team

Screenwriter Nemoto wrote the scripts for the show during the Covid-19 pandemic, working remotely with Misato and the production team to carefully craft the world of My Melody. “Having My Melody and Kuromi speak lines I wrote felt like a reward for me as a writer,” she said. “Because of the pandemic, I couldn’t meet with director Misato or the producers in person, but we connected remotely each week, carefully building this together. The project is filled with love for the world of My Melody, beloved by people of all ages. I believe everyone, from adults to children, will have favorite scenes and lines.”
